Missouri gas prices climb as Spring fuel switch takes hold

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., (KBSI) — Missouri drivers are seeing higher gas prices as the seasonal transition to summer-blend fuel begins, according to AAA.

The statewide average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline is $2.64, according to AAA Missouri’s Weekend Gas Watch. That is 13 cents higher than a week ago and 20 cents lower than the same time last year.

Among Missouri’s major metropolitan areas, drivers in St. Louis are paying the highest average price at $2.78 per gallon, while drivers in Joplin are paying the lowest at $2.52.

The national average for regular unleaded gasoline is $2.98 per gallon, up 5 cents from last week and down 20 cents from a year ago, AAA reported.

AAA spokesperson Nick Chabarria said the increase reflects a typical seasonal pattern as refineries switch to summer-blend gasoline, which is more expensive to produce.

Summer-blend fuel is designed to burn cleaner and reduce smog during warmer months. The transition requires refinery adjustments that can temporarily tighten supply, contributing to higher prices at the pump.

Despite the recent increase, Missouri drivers are still paying about 20 cents less per gallon than they were at this time last year, AAA said.
