POPLAR BLUFF, Mo., (KBSI) — The City of Poplar Bluff has earned the Missouri Blue Shield designation for 2026, according to the Missouri Department of Public Safety.

The designation recognizes Missouri communities that demonstrate a commitment to enhancing public safety, supporting law enforcement and building partnerships between law enforcement agencies and the community. Poplar Bluff also received the designation in 2025.

The Missouri Blue Shield Program was created by Gov. Mike Kehoe in January 2025 through Executive Order 25-03. In its first year, 201 Missouri communities earned the designation, which highlights local efforts to reduce crime and strengthen law enforcement-community partnerships. Communities that received the designation in 2025 were required to reapply for 2026 consideration.

“The Blue Shield program has shown what’s possible when communities commit to prioritizing law enforcement and public safety,” Kehoe said in a statement. “After awarding $50,000 grants to more than 200 communities last year, we’re continuing that work by welcoming new communities and renewing Blue Shield designations for counties, towns and cities that remain committed to the program.”

Mark James, director of the Missouri Department of Public Safety, said the program supports joint efforts between law enforcement and residents.

“Strengthening public safety and committing to joint law enforcement-community safety efforts is what the Blue Shield Program is all about,” James said. He noted that 2025 grant funding helped provide equipment including mobile data terminals, body cameras, license plate readers, ballistic vests, interoperable radios and vehicles to participating agencies.

Communities qualify for the Missouri Blue Shield designation based on their efforts to reduce crime, invest in public safety initiatives and foster collaboration with law enforcement and community stakeholders. Participating communities are reviewed annually to ensure they continue to meet program standards.
