More Missouri communities opening storm shelters ahead of severe weather

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI (KBSI) — Several communities across southeast Missouri are preparing for severe weather by opening storm shelters and FEMA safe rooms for residents.
Emergency officials in Cardwell say they are monitoring incoming storms and may open the FEMA safe room at Southland Elementary School if conditions worsen.
Other communities are also making shelters available.
Missouri shelters:
– Advance R-IV Schools — FEMA safe room opened at 11 a.m.
– Scott City High School — FEMA building scheduled to open at 4:30 p.m.
– Carter County — FEMA buildings in Ellsinore and Van Buren opening at 3:30 p.m., along with the Grandin maintenance
– New Madrid High School- FEMA Shelter opening at 4 p.m., located behind the high school next to the middle school, enter at the south end of the middle school
– Steele East Elementary School — safety room available if needed
– Puxico Activities Center — FEMA shelter may open if conditions worsen or warnings are issued
– Bernie Community Center — will open if needed
Illinois shelters:
– Vienna High School — doors A (main entry), J (commons entry) and Q (gym entry) unlocked; locker rooms and gyms recommended shelter areas
– Cypress Grade School — open during the severe weather threat; enter through the cafeteria door
– Buncombe Grade School — opening at 2 p.m.; main gym entrance open with basement classroom recommended for shelter
– Ozark Baptist Church — open; enter through the back fellowship hall door
– Simpson Baptist Church — fellowship hall doors unlocked; fellowship hall and gym recommended shelter areas
Local officials encourage residents to monitor weather alerts and head to designated shelters if warnings are issued.
Emergency managers also remind residents to follow posted traffic and parking instructions at shelter locations so emergency vehicles can access the area.
