Fire damages vacant home in Cape Girardeau; cause under investigation

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — Firefighters responded to a structure fire Sunday morning at a vacant home on Good Hope Street, according to the Cape Girardeau Fire Department.

Crews were dispatched around 7:36 a.m. March 22 to 1101 Good Hope St., where they found smoke and flames coming from a first-floor window.

Firefighters launched an aggressive interior attack and encountered moderate fire conditions inside the home. The incident was upgraded to a working fire, prompting additional mutual aid coverage for city stations.

The fire was extinguished in about 30 minutes, followed by overhaul operations. Crews remained on scene for approximately three hours.

Officials said the home was unoccupied at the time of the fire. The cause remains under investigation, and minors at the scene have been referred to the Cape Girardeau Police Department for questioning.
