CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — Southeast Missouri State University’s Autism Center for Diagnosis and Treatment has expanded its autism assessment capabilities to include children up to age 8.

Beginning April 1, the center will use the EarliPoint assessment system for a broader age range. The technology uses eye-tracking to measure how children respond to visual stimuli, comparing the data to clinically validated behavioral patterns.

Previously limited to children up to 30 months old, the system can now be used as part of evaluations for children through age 8. The center continues to diagnose individuals up to age 18 and is the only provider in southeast Missouri offering EarliPoint.

Officials say the expansion will help identify autism earlier and connect children with appropriate resources.

During evaluations, children watch short videos while the system tracks eye movements. Results are combined with traditional assessment tools, including the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, questionnaires and cognitive testing.

Staff also gather input from teachers, counselors and pediatricians to ensure a comprehensive evaluation and accurate diagnosis.

The center said it also works to identify other conditions when symptoms overlap with autism, helping families find appropriate support.

Families must have a referral from a professional to schedule an evaluation. For more information, call 573-986-4985 or visit University Autism Center | SEMO.
