JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., (KBSI) — The Missouri Department of Transportation is urging drivers to “work with us” as the state prepares for a historic construction season expected to include more than 1,000 active work zones.
The reminder comes during National Work Zone Awareness Week, observed April 20-24, as officials stress the importance of safe driving to protect highway workers and motorists.
In 2025, 24 people were killed in Missouri work zone crashes. Distracted driving contributed to at least 11 of those deaths and more than 400 crashes overall, according to MoDOT. Officials said distracted driving and excessive speed remain the leading causes of work zone incidents.
“On any given day this construction season, we expect to have as many as 1,000 active work zones across Missouri,” said State Highway Safety and Traffic Engineer Jon Nelson. “Within each of these zones are workers building and maintaining the transportation system. Drivers should stay alert, slow down and help ensure everyone gets home safely.”
Missouri law requires drivers to move over or slow down when approaching emergency or state vehicles with flashing lights. Officials also encourage motorists to watch for changing traffic conditions, follow posted signs and merge ahead of lane closures.
While overall traffic fatalities in Missouri have declined over the past three years, work zone deaths have remained steady. MoDOT reported its protective vehicles were struck 50 times in 2025, a significant increase from the previous year.
Officials said drivers can view current work zones and plan routes using Traveler Information Map.
