CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — The City of Cape Girardeau’s Historic Preservation Commission works to protect and promote the community’s historic resources through preservation efforts, public programs and advisory roles.

The nine-member commission, appointed by the City Council, maintains an inventory of historic properties, reviews requests for Certificates of Appropriateness and provides recommendations on historic district and landmark designations. Members also advise on matters involving planning, zoning, grants and code changes related to historic properties.

The commission meets monthly and hosts community programs throughout the year, including events during Historic Preservation Month aimed at educating the public about the value of preserving local history.

As part of this year’s activities, the commission will host a free event at Old Lorimier Cemetery on May 4 at 5:30 p.m. The event will include a walking tour of the cemetery, established in 1808, and a presentation highlighting notable historical figures buried at the site.
