ATLANTA (KBSI) — The Federal Emergency Management Agency has approved $19.9 million in funding for flood mitigation projects across five states, including Kentucky.

The funding will support long-term efforts in Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi and South Carolina aimed at reducing flood risks and improving community resilience.

FEMA said the funding is part of more than $250 million announced nationwide for over 100 mitigation projects.

Approved projects include elevating flood-prone homes in Florida, acquiring and demolishing properties in Alabama and Kentucky, and improving stormwater management in Mississippi. In Kentucky, more than $416,000 will go toward the demolition of five flood-prone properties in Wayland.

Officials said the projects are funded through FEMA’s Flood Mitigation Assistance program and are intended to reduce damage, lower recovery costs and protect lives during future flood events.
