JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., (KBSI) — A new survey from AAA shows growing interest in travel along historic Route 66 as the highway approaches its 100th anniversary in 2026.

According to the survey, 41% of U.S. adults plan to visit part of Route 66 during the centennial year, with an additional 15% expressing interest after learning about the milestone.

Among those planning trips, most expect to travel by personal vehicle, while others plan to join tours, rent cars or travel by motorcycle or recreational vehicle. Many respondents said they plan to travel with family or friends, highlighting the route’s multigenerational appeal.

AAA has also released a commemorative Route 66 centennial guide map featuring more than 70 landmarks along the historic roadway, which stretches from Chicago to Santa Monica.

Springfield, Missouri, has been selected to host the national kickoff celebration for the Route 66 centennial from April 30 through May 2, according to organizers.

Officials say the milestone underscores Route 66’s lasting cultural and economic impact, as well as its role in shaping American travel and tourism.
