ZEIGLER, Ill. (KBSI) — The City of Zeigler Fire Department is warning residents that citations will be issued for illegal burning within city limits.

Officials said recent incidents involve residents burning prohibited materials despite a recent citywide cleanup effort. Authorities emphasized that burning non-natural materials poses risks to property, neighboring homes and public health.

Under city ordinance, only natural materials such as sticks, limbs and leaves are permitted. All other materials are considered illegal to burn.

The fire department and the city’s code enforcement officer said violations will result in $250 citations.

Residents are encouraged to report illegal burning by contacting the Franklin County Office of Emergency Management and Communications to request a response.
