SOUTHERN ILLINOIS (KBSI) — Rural Health Inc. is encouraging residents to recognize early signs of mental health concerns and seek treatment during Mental Health Awareness Month in May.
Officials said mental health plays a critical role in daily life, affecting how people think, feel and interact, as well as their ability to manage work, relationships and community involvement.
“Mental illnesses are medical conditions involving changes in emotion, appetite, thinking or behavior that can affect daily functioning,” the organization said in a statement.
Rural Health Inc. said early support — including access to stable housing, employment assistance, health care and community programs — can improve long-term stability and well-being.
Common warning signs may include significant mood changes, persistent anxiety, withdrawal, changes in sleep or eating habits, increased substance use, confusion or feelings of hopelessness.
Officials said untreated symptoms can worsen over time.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 12% of U.S. adults reported regular feelings of anxiety in 2024, while about 5% reported ongoing depression.
The agency also reported more than 57 million health care visits related to mental disorders and more than 48,800 suicide deaths linked to mental health conditions.
Rural Health Inc. said treatment options may include therapy, medication or a combination of both, and encouraged individuals to speak with a health care provider if they have concerns about their mental health or that of a loved one.
The organization provides services in Johnson, Massac and Union counties and operates clinics in Anna, Dongola, Goreville, Metropolis and Vienna.
