MDC seeks volunteers for statewide breeding bird survey

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., (KBSI) — The Missouri Department of Conservation is seeking experienced birders to assist with the 2026 North American Breeding Bird Survey.
Officials said volunteers are needed to cover five routes across Missouri during the survey period from May 27 to July 7. The open routes are located in Maries, Clay, Nodaway, Platte and Lafayette counties.
The annual survey is part of a long-running international effort that began in 1966 to track bird populations and trends across North America. Participants collect data along roadside routes by identifying and counting birds seen or heard at designated stops.
Each route is approximately 24.5 miles long, with observation points every half mile. Volunteers conduct three-minute counts at each stop, typically beginning before sunrise and completing the survey in about five hours.
Officials said participants must be able to identify birds by sight and sound, have reliable transportation and complete required training before collecting data.
Conservation officials said the survey plays a key role in monitoring bird populations, which face threats including habitat loss, fragmentation and environmental changes.
Those interested in volunteering can contact the Missouri Department of Conservation for more information.
