Jackson County Sheriff’s Office to increase DUI, seat belt enforcement through Fourth of July

JACKSON COUNTY, Ill., (KBSI) — The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office will increase traffic enforcement efforts ahead of the Independence Day holiday, with a focus on impaired driving and seat belt violations.

The enforcement campaign will run from June 19 through July 6 and will cover three summer weekends surrounding the Fourth of July holiday.

“We’re asking all of our residents and visitors to celebrate Independence Day safely,” Sgt. Ronald Stanton said. “It’s simple: If you’re driving, don’t drink or use drugs. Our officers will be out in full force to keep impaired drivers off the road.”

The sheriff’s office will join the Illinois State Police and more than 200 local law enforcement agencies across the state in the increased enforcement effort.

Officials are encouraging motorists to designate a sober driver before celebrating, use a taxi, public transportation, a ride-sharing service or a sober friend or family member if impaired, and report suspected impaired drivers by calling 911 when it is safe to do so.

Drivers are also reminded to ensure everyone in their vehicle is wearing a seat belt.

The campaign is funded through federal highway safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation and supported by the Illinois State Police and local law enforcement agencies statewide.
