METROPOLIS, Ill., (KBSI) – The Metropolis Police Department is increasing traffic enforcement through the Independence Day holiday with a focus on impaired and unbuckled drivers.

The campaign runs from June 19 through July 6, covering three summer weekends surrounding the Fourth of July holiday.

According to the department, officers will participate in a statewide enforcement effort alongside the Illinois State Police and more than 200 local law enforcement agencies.

“We’re asking all of our residents and visitors to celebrate Independence Day safely,” Police Chief Harry Masse said. “If you’re driving, don’t drink or use drugs. Our officers will be out in full force to keep impaired drivers off the road.”

Police are encouraging motorists to designate a sober driver, use a taxi or ride-share service if impaired, report suspected drunk drivers by calling 911 and ensure everyone in the vehicle is wearing a seat belt.

The campaign is funded by federal highway safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation and supported by the Illinois State Police as part of IDOT’s “It’s Not a Game” traffic safety campaign.
