BENTON, Mo., (KBSI) — With dangerous heat expected across Missouri over the next several days, the Scott County Health Department is reminding residents to recognize the warning signs of heat-related illnesses.

Health officials said heat exhaustion can develop quickly during periods of high temperatures and humidity, particularly for people spending time outdoors. Symptoms should be treated immediately by moving to a cool place, resting and drinking water.

The department warns that heat stroke is a life-threatening medical emergency. Anyone experiencing a high body temperature, confusion, loss of consciousness or an inability to sweat should receive immediate medical attention by calling 911.

Officials encourage residents to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks, wear lightweight clothing and check on children, older adults, neighbors and others who may be especially vulnerable to extreme heat, including those working outdoors.
