SEMO music programs earn national reaccreditation through 2033

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — Southeast Missouri State University’s music programs have earned reaccreditation from the National Association of Schools of Music through the 2032-33 academic year.

The association evaluates collegiate music programs based on curriculum, faculty qualifications, student learning, facilities, resources and overall program quality. Reviews are conducted every 10 years.

“This reaccreditation is an independent confirmation that we are that program,” said Dr. Nicholas Kenney, chair of SEMO’s Department of Music and professor of horn. “It gives students and their families confidence that they’re earning a degree from a program that meets national expectations.”

The multiyear review included a comprehensive self-study, an evaluation of student learning outcomes, a curriculum review and an on campus visit by reviewers from other accredited institutions.

Reviewers met with faculty, students, administrators and staff, observed classes and rehearsals, and evaluated facilities and academic processes. The accrediting commission also commended the Department of Music for its response during the review.

SEMO’s music programs prepare students for careers in performance, music education, composition, conducting and other areas of the industry.
