Illinois State Police launches bicycle response team for large-scale events

SPRINGFIELD, Ill., (KBSI) — Illinois State Police has launched a new Bicycle Response Team designed to improve public safety and mobility at large events across the state.
The team made its debut this summer at the 2026 Illinois State Fair, where 11 bicycle officers are being deployed in addition to troopers already conducting foot patrols.
ISP said bicycle patrols allow troopers to move through crowded areas that can be difficult to access with traditional patrol vehicles. Officers can also respond more quickly to incidents, assist with crowd management and interact directly with people attending events.
The team is expected to be used at fairs, festivals, parades and other large gatherings.
Troopers serving on the team will continue their regular patrol assignments but can be deployed as bicycle officers when needed. Members must complete a physically demanding bicycle operator training program, and some will receive additional training in crowd management and control tactics.
ISP plans to eventually have about 100 trained bicycle operators participating in the volunteer program statewide.
