LANCASTER, Ky., (KBSI) — A man wanted in connection with a 2013 Kentucky murder was taken into custody after authorities say he fired at law enforcement, fled into a wooded area and apparently fell about 40 feet from a cliff.

Kentucky State Police said investigators received information Aug. 12 about the whereabouts of Jason Patterson, 55, who was wanted on a Christian County District Court warrant for murder in connection with the July 30, 2013, death of Faye Springfield.

Just before 9:30 a.m. Aug. 14, members of the KSP Special Response Team and several other specialized units responded to a home on Polly’s Bend Road in Garrard County to apprehend Patterson.

Police said Patterson refused to cooperate during lengthy negotiations and fired a weapon at law enforcement before running into a wooded area.

After an extensive search, authorities located Patterson on a cliffside. Police said he appeared to have suffered injuries after falling approximately 40 feet.

KSP personnel treated Patterson before rescue crews used a rope system to hoist him from the area. He was taken by ambulance to University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital for treatment.

Patterson remained in KSP custody while hospitalized. Police said that after his release, he is expected to be served with the outstanding murder warrant and a theft by unlawful taking warrant before being lodged in jail.

The Garrard County Sheriff’s Office assisted KSP.

The investigation remains ongoing.
