Man reporting stolen property found hiding in attic, sheriff’s office says

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Ill., (KBSI) — A man who called deputies to report stolen property was arrested after authorities discovered he was wanted on multiple warrants, according to the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded Sept. 1 to the Pittsburg area after Johnathan A. Ross, 38, reported that his property had been stolen.

During the investigation, deputies learned Ross had outstanding warrants in Williamson and Jackson counties, including warrants for aggravated battery and aggravated domestic battery.

Deputies went to Ross’ home on West Colp Avenue, where he allegedly ignored repeated orders to come outside. Additional deputies entered the home and found Ross hiding in the attic, according to the sheriff’s office.

Authorities said Ross continued to refuse commands, prompting deputies to use pepper spray. Ross eventually came down from the attic but allegedly shoved a deputy as officers attempted to take him into custody.

Ross was taken to the Williamson County Jail. He was cited on charges of aggravated battery to a peace officer, a Class 2 felony, and resisting or obstructing a peace officer, a Class A misdemeanor.

The sheriff’s office said Ross was also arrested after a separate incident in March in which he allegedly kicked and struck a deputy who was attempting to serve a warrant.

Williamson County Sheriff Jeff Diederich said resisting arrest increases the risk of injury to officers and those being taken into custody.

The original theft complaint remains under investigation. Deputies are working to obtain video evidence connected to the case.
