CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, Mo. (KBSI) — A 19-year-old man faces two felony charges after an accidental shooting in Cape Girardeau County was initially reported as a drive-by shooting, according to court documents.

Luis Fernando Carcamo Lara, a Honduran national, is charged with receiving stolen property involving a firearm, a Class C felony, and unlawful use of a weapon while intoxicated, a Class E felony.

According to a probable cause statement filed by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Carcamo Lara and another man were involved in an accidental shooting Oct. 18.

Investigators say Carcamo Lara was handling a Taurus G2C 9mm handgun when he shot the other man in the left leg.

Both men initially told authorities they were victims of a drive-by shooting. However, investigators determined the shooting was accidental based on statements from those involved and physical evidence.

Court documents state both men admitted to handling the firearm and being highly intoxicated at the time of the shooting.

Following the shooting, investigators say Carcamo Lara drove to his residence, where he hid the handgun inside a backpack in his bedroom closet.

He then drove the injured man to a hospital in Cape Girardeau.

While processing the vehicle, investigators discovered a bullet hole in the passenger-side door that extended into the passenger seat. A small amount of blood was also found on the passenger-side floorboard.

According to the probable cause statement, Carcamo Lara gave investigators permission to retrieve the handgun from his residence.

A records check revealed the firearm had been reported stolen to the Memphis Police Department in Tennessee. Investigators confirmed the stolen firearm report was still active.
Carcamo Lara told investigators the handgun belonged to another man identified as Jose Reyes.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control submitted the probable cause statement to the Cape Girardeau County Circuit Court on Monday, Oct. 19.

The case remains pending.
