1 dead, 1 injured after crash in Union County

UNION COUNTY, Ill. (KBSI) – One person died and another was injured in a three-vehicle crash in Union County Monday night.

Illinois State Police troopers responded to a crash on Illinois Route 146 near Refuge Road at 9:11 p.m. on January 2.

A 2001 blue Ford Crown Victoria driven by a 73-year-old man from Jonesboro, Ill. was traveling southbound on Route 146 near Refuge Road and drove into oncoming northbound traffic, according to the Illinois State Police.

The car sidewsiped a vehicle driven by Aaron Lee, 57, of De Soto, Ill. causing Lee’s vehicle to hit a guardrail and land in a ditch.

Then, the Crown Victoria hit a 2005 Nissan Frontier driven by 59-year-old Peggy E. Duty of Jonesboro, Ill. head on. She was taken to an area hospital with injuries.

The driver of the Crown Victoria was pronounced dead at the scene.

Illinois Route 3 was closed with traffic diverted onto Refuge Road for the investigation.

All lanes opened about 1 a.m. on Tuesday.
