18 year old accused of shooting at juveniles in Poplar Bluff

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. (KBSI) – An 18-year-old man faces several charges after police say he shot at two juveniles.

Damion Champion faces two charges of assault – 2nd degree, two charges of armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon – subsection 4 – exhibiting and endangering the welfare of a child creating substantial risk.

Poplar Bluff police officers responded to the 600 block of Arthur Street around 4:40 p.m. on March 31 for a report of one gunshot that was fired.

Two juveniles told police they were shot at by a white male who left the area.

Champion was developed as a suspect. Police contacted him at his apartment on April 1.

He told police he accompanied a juvnile relative who was about to fight two other juveniles in the 600 block of Arthur Street. Police say Champion told them one of the juveniles had one hand in a hoodie pocket and he felt as though he was making the motion to pull out a gun, so he pulled out his gun and fired one round in the general direction of the two juveniles.

He told police he left the area and left the gun in the back yard of a neighboring home on Don Street.

Champion took police to the home and showed them where he hid the Glock 48 model gun in heavy brush. Police seized the gun along with six live rounds.

Police say Champion also took an officer to the area where the gun was shot. He showed the detective were he was standing and the two juveniles were standing, according to police.
