2 face felony charges in separate case in Mt. Vernon

MT. VERNON, Ill. (KBSI) – Two people face felony charges in Mt. Vernon, Illinois.

June 6, 10:22 p.m. officers stopped a vehicle at 15th and Casey after observing the vehicle committing a violation of the Illinois vehicle code, according to the Mt. Vernon Police Department.

During the traffic stop police say a person in the vehicle, 19-year-old Israel Garrett, began to run on foot. Officers caught up with Garrett in the area of 15th and College and saw him discard a bag. During a search of the bag, police say officers located a loaded 9mm handgun. Garrett was arrested on charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and resisting arrest. His bond is to be set.

At 2:05 a.m. officers responded to a report of a female screaming for help a home in 900 block of Salem Road. When officers arrived, they saw 36-year-old James Litteral at the home with blood on his clothing. Litteral began to run away on foot. Officers chased him took him into custody a few blocks away.

Police say Litteral forced his way into a home through a locked door. Once inside police say he attacked two people. One of the victims was taken to a local hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening injury.

Litteral was taken to the Jefferson County Justice Center on charges of home invasion, aggravated battery, domestic battery, and resisting arrest. His bond is to be set.
