A man is in custody after officers say he barricaded himself inside his home with his infant

CARBONDALE, Ill. (KBSI) -A man is in custody after barricading himself inside his residence with a child.

According to the Carbondale Police Department on December 5, 2024, at 1:38 a.m., City of Carbondale police officers responded to a home on the 400 block of South Poplar Street for a report of a disturbance.

Officers arrived and learned that the suspect, Joseph D. Clopton, age 39 of Carbondale, battered an acquaintance and then barricaded himself inside the residence with his infant child.

Officers secured the area and began negotiations for Clopton to surrender himself peacefully.

Officers obtained a search warrant to enter the apartment. Officers continued to negotiate with Clopton for several hours from outside the residence.

A Civic Alert message was sent by officers asking the public to avoid the area.

Clopton eventually surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody around 7:46 a.m.

The infant was not injured and was turned over to the mother.

Officers charged Clopton with Domestic Battery, Endangering the Life or Health of a Child and Resisting a Police Officer.

Clopton was arrested and taken to Jackson County Jail.

 The investigation into the incident remains active and ongoing.
