Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s to honor loved ones

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – The 2023 Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Cape Girardeau kicks off Saturday, October 21 at Cape County North Park at 8 a.m.

More than 150 walkers will be decked out in purple and fifty teams honoring a loved one either living with or who has died from Alzheimer’s.

Glen Campbell is the President of the Cape Catfish Prospect League and says his mother is currently facing a battle with Alzheimer’s.

He says, “How long it takes to get really bad, I don’t know everybody is a little bit different. But her case, it was just a gradual decline.”

Campbell says the Alzheimer’s association is an important cause for him, and he walks for his mother,

“She would just forget the easiest things, but you wouldn’t have known, if you talk to her you wouldn’t have known it.”

Kelly Quinn is the Walk Manager for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, she touches on the importance of people gathering to take part in this event, “It not only raises critical funds that allow the Alzheimer’s Association to provide it’s free resources to people affected by Alzheimer’s and dementia. It brings that community together and reminds us that we’re not alone in this very lonely, it can be very lonely journey.”
Quinn says it’s not always easy to see a change in a loved one. but keeping an eye on behavior is key to recognizing the disease.

Quinn says, “Changes in behavior or demeanor, that could be a sign, if someone’s ability to make decisions changes drastically that could be a sign of Alzheimer’s.”

Promise Garden flowers that are given to walkers with each color corresponding to their connection to the disease.

  • Blue represents someone living with Alzheimer‘s or another dementia.
  • Purple is for those who have lost someone to the disease.
  • Yellow represents someone who is currently supporting or caring for a person living with Alzheimer‘s.
  • Orange is for those who support the cause and the Association’s vision of a world without Alzheimer‘s and all other dementia.
