ST. LOUIS, Mo., (KBSI) — Dozens of Ameren lineworkers, apprentices, and judges from Missouri and Illinois will travel to Bonner Springs, Kansas, later this week to compete in the 41st annual International Lineman’s Rodeo.
Often called the “Lineman Olympics,” the multiday event draws top competitors from around the world to test their skill, speed, and safety in a series of challenging events.
Ameren Missouri is sending 12 lineworkers, eight apprentices, and 17 judges and committee members, while Ameren Illinois will send 21 lineworkers, six apprentices, and 10 judges and committee members. The rodeo also offers families the chance to see firsthand the expertise and dedication required of lineworkers who keep electricity flowing safely and reliably.
“Ameren’s lineworkers and apprentices are deeply dedicated to their craft,” said Tim Lafser, senior vice president of energy delivery, operations, and technical services for Ameren Missouri. “The International Lineman’s Rodeo gives them a platform to demonstrate their skill, precision, and teamwork—representing Ameren and the communities we serve.”
Teams will compete in events such as the Hurtman Rescue, Pole Climb contest, and two mystery challenges based on real-world tasks performed by lineworkers. Competitors are judged on speed, adherence to safety standards, and technical accuracy. Apprentices also complete a written test as part of their competition.
In 2024, Ameren Illinois lineworkers Jason Novak, Clayton Gulley, and Austin Lewis took home top honors, earning best overall among more than 255 teams.
“Jason, Austin, and Clayton’s pursuit of a second consecutive championship reflects teamwork, training, and the highest standards of safety in the field—values that drive our entire organization every day,” said Luke Wollin, vice president of electric operations for Ameren Illinois.
