Cape Girardeau issues precautionary boil water advisory after storm-related power outage

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) — A precautionary boil water advisory has been issued for the City of Cape Girardeau following a storm-related power outage that may have caused water pressure to drop below 20 pounds per square inch, city officials said.

Officials said the advisory is precautionary and no contamination of the water system has been detected.

Residents are advised to boil water intended for drinking, brushing teeth or food preparation for at least three minutes before use and allow it to cool before consuming. Officials also recommend discarding ice cubes and avoiding the use of household automatic ice makers until the advisory is lifted.

Dishes and other food-contact surfaces should be disinfected by immersing them for at least one minute in tap water mixed with one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.

Water used for bathing generally does not need to be boiled, but children should be supervised to ensure they do not ingest the water. People with open cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physician before bathing.

City officials said the advisory is expected to remain in effect for up to 48 hours unless residents are notified otherwise.

Residents with questions may contact the city during regular business hours or after hours through the city’s utility service line.
