ENERGY, Ill. (KBSI) – Multiple law enforcement agencies are investigating after a report of an armed robbery and assault in Energy.

Police officers from Energy and Herrin and Williamson County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of an armed robbery and assault at an apartment complex on Pine Street in Energy on Thursday, August 22 at 11:35 a.m.

Officers met a woman who told them that after a referral from a friend, she was looking to rent an apartment when a black male wearing a mask approached her with a handgun, demanded money, struck her in the face with the weapon and left on foot.

She reported an undertermined amount of cash was taken. An ambulance came to the scene. The woman was treated for minor injuries and taken to the Energy Police Department to speak with detectives.

As a precaution, the nearby Unity Christian School was put on lockdown.

Officers say they conducted extensive searches, including using a police K-9 and spoke to several potential witnesses. Police say the search and witnesses corroborated the victim’s story.

Police believe the suspect left Energy in a vehicle and was no longer an immediate threat to anyone in the area. Police also say this was most likely a targeted action directed at the specific victim rather than a random act.

Energy police requested that the Williamson County Sheriff’s Department Investigations Unit, under the direction of Sheriff Jeff Diederich, take control of the investigation.
