Although black bear attacks are rare, residents are advised to take precautions such as securing trash containers and feeding pets indoors. When hiking in bear country, travelers should make noise to alert bears, travel in groups and keep children close.
If encountered by a bear, residents should remain standing upright, avoid direct eye contact and back away slowly. Bear spray is also an effective deterrent.
