Best in Show: Bernie teen’s artwork stands out at Sikeston art show

SIKESTON, Mo. (KBSI) – A picture can paint a thousand words.

For Alyssa Pulliam, a senior at Bernie High School, that picture brought her some hardware.

Her painting of actor

Heath Ledger won Pulliam Best in Show at the 46th Annual Regional High School Art Show at the Sikeston Depot Museum and Cultural Center on Friday.

“I definitely feel really crazy about this right now,” Pulliam said after receiving the award. “I was not expecting that at all. There is so much great art here that I was in awe of everybody else’s art. This honor is just a crazy experience for me.”

So what inspired this painting?

“Heath Ledger is one of my favorite actors, and that picture of him is just absolutely crazy,” she said. “Everything behind it and how stoic he looks is so good to me.”

Pulliam competed in this very same art show as a freshman in 2019, but the show was canceled the last two years because of COVID.

“I remember walking in here, and at the time I didn’t win anything because I was still coming up as an artist,” she said. “To come back from that experience and actually place in this was a really good experience for me.”

This art show will be open every Wednesday through Sunday until April 30, except Easter Sunday. Viewing is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
