Body recovered from Mississippi River near Cape Girardeau

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — Authorities are recovering a body from the Mississippi River in Cape Girardeau.

Police received a call about the body around 9 a.m. and responded to the Red Star Boat Ramp along with the fire department and multiple marine response crews.

The identity of the body has not been released.

A death investigation is underway after the Cape Girardeau Police Department received a call around 9 am this morning of a possible body in the Mississippi River near the Red Star access boat ramp in Cape Girardeau. Public Information’s Officer Bobby Newton shares details. 

They responded down there along with the fire department, and they were able to retrieve it and they were able to identify it as a body.” 

According to Newton the body has not been identified at this time, and authorities are looking into possible missing persons reports throughout the area.

Newton says that an investigation is underway, but many details are unknown at this time. Anyone with anyone information is encouraged to contact the Cape Girardeau Police Department. 

“We are currently conducting an investigation to identify the identity of the individual” says Newton.

Cape Girardeau County Coroner Craig Williams says the body was identified as 52-year-old Shane Barendregt.

The cause of death remains undetermined, pending the results of an autopsy scheduled for Thursday.
