Brookport man arrested after traffic stop leads to meth seizure in Paducah

PADUCAH, Ky., (KBSI) — A Brookport, Illinois, man was arrested Monday after deputies found suspected methamphetamine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia during a traffic stop in Paducah.

According to the McCracken County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy conducted a traffic stop around 2:52 p.m. March 9 near Estelle Street and Maple Avenue after observing a seatbelt violation.

The driver was identified as Michael Smith, 43, of Brookport, Illinois. Deputies said Smith appeared nervous during the stop, prompting further investigation.

Deputy Zach Kimbler conducted the stop and was assisted by Deputy Latta and K-9 Bobi. Authorities said the K-9 conducted a free-air sniff around the vehicle and alerted to the presence of narcotics.

A search of the vehicle resulted in deputies locating a magnetic container holding approximately 13 grams of suspected methamphetamine, along with suspected marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Smith was arrested and transported to the McCracken County Jail.

He is charged with:

  • Failure to wear a seat belt
  • First-degree trafficking in a controlled substance (methamphetamine)
  • Possession of marijuana
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia
