MURRAY, Ky., (KBSI)— A Calloway County Jail inmate faces additional charges after jail staff allegedly discovered controlled substances during a routine search following a work-release assignment.

According to the Calloway County Jail, deputies conducted a standard search June 12 as inmate Mahauta J. Reed returned to the facility from work release.

During the search, deputies allegedly found controlled medication concealed inside the seam of a piece of clothing belonging to Reed.

Following an investigation, Reed was charged with first-degree promoting contraband, a Class D felony; first-degree possession of a controlled substance (hydrocodone), a Class D felony; and third-degree possession of a controlled substance, a Class A misdemeanor.

At the time of the incident, Reed was serving a 20-day sentence imposed by Calloway County District Court. Jail officials said Reed will remain incarcerated after completing the original sentence and is being held on a $2,500 cash bond set by District Judge Randall Hutchens.

Jail officials said controlled substances inside correctional facilities can create significant safety concerns, including overdoses, medical emergencies, violence and disruptions to jail operations.

The Calloway County Jail said it will continue to investigate and pursue charges against individuals accused of bringing contraband into the facility.

All charges are allegations, and Reed is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
