CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) — A gathering at The Perch Mahjong Lounge brought players together Sunday to support rescue dogs and celebrate the friendships that prompted a special recognition from the city.
Mayor Robbie Guard declared Nov. 1, 2026, Cape Girardeau Mahjong Day during the lounge’s “Hunting for Mahjong” fundraiser benefiting Mac’s Mission.
The proclamation recognized the game’s role in encouraging social interaction, mental engagement and a sense of belonging.
“Sometimes the most meaningful connections are made when we put down our phones and we gather around the table,” Guard said while reading the proclamation.
For Dianna Gibbs, those connections have become part of her weekly routine. A member of The Perch, Gibbs said she plays there at least once, sometimes twice, a week.
“This is absolutely the greatest community. I have made so many great friends,” Gibbs said. “And it’s a great way to socialize and play mahjong and support the community.”
Sandy Penzel, another member who plays about once a week, said the game has helped her expand her circle of friends.
“Once you start playing mahjong here, you just start getting a bunch of new friends. And everybody loves to play together,” Penzel said.
Guard’s proclamation described mahjong as more than a game of strategy and skill.
“It has become a meaningful way to foster friendships, encourage laughter, and create lasting memories,” he said.
Sunday’s gathering also gave players an opportunity to support Mac’s Mission, with all proceeds benefiting the rescue organization.
Participants chose between social games with friends and a tournament featuring six timed games. The event also included pop-up shopping, raffles, a silent auction, door prizes and a gift for every player.
Attendees could sponsor a rescue dog with a $20 donation to help it move closer to finding a permanent home.
Gibbs said supporting rescue dogs gave her another reason to attend.
“I’m a big supporter of rescue dogs. And so, anything that we can do for the puppies is well worth our time,” she said. “And plus, we get to play mahjong with all of our great friends.”
