CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — Several firefighters with the Cape Girardeau Fire Department were recently recognized with lifesaving awards from the Veterans of Foreign Wars for their actions during a house fire in December.

According to the department, firefighters responded to a fire where a woman was trapped in a corner bedroom as flames rapidly spread toward the room.

Crew members from Engine 4 broke a window and rescued the woman before the fire engulfed the bedroom, officials said.

The firefighters were honored for their quick actions that helped save the woman’s life during the incident.
