Cape Girardeau leaders break ground for new airport terminal

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – City of Cape Girardeau leaders broke ground for a new airport terminal on Tuesday.

Airport Board Chairman Richard Note spoke about the long history of aviation. The existing airport terminal has served patrons since 1956.

Note says the current terminal is outdated and does not meet expectations of the airport’s current stakeholders.

Now that funding has been secured to replace the terminal, Note says it will bring a new, updated gateway to the Cape Girardeau region.

“We are excited to create a terminal that is inviting, exciting, and provides and modern regional airport,” Note said. “We are ready for the future and future growth in our region.”

The airport began as Harris Field, a training field in 1942. It was acquired by the city of Cape Girardeau in 1946. Since 1978 several different air carriers have provided service to more than 200,000 passengers. The current airport terminal is 67 years old.

The current terminal is 67 years old. Cape Girardeau is one of nine commercial airports in Missouri.

The new 20,000 plus square foot will include two gates. It is designed to allow for future expansion as the airport continues to grow, according to Airport Manager Katrina Amos. There will also be a mothers’ room and sensory room for families.

“I am so happy this day is here, I even had to prepare my first big girl speech,” said Amos. “It’s going to have restrooms beyond security checkpoint, concessions, and service animal relief areas.

She says the project has been in the works since 2019 and will cost around $12,016,000.

Mike Coan a project director with KCI Construction says his team is “very excited to be a part of this.”

A representative with Burns & McDonald, the engineering, architecture, construction, environmental and consulting team says she grew up 50 miles from Cape Girardeau. She says working on the project is an absolute pleasure and that it brings opportunities to the area.
