Cape Girardeau man sentenced to 42 years for murder in Carbondale

JACKSON COUNTY, Ill. (KBSI) – A Cape Girardeau, Mo. man was sentenced Thursday to 42 years behind bars for first-degree murder in Carbondale, Ill.
Gregory Hopkins, 30, of Cape Girardeau, was sentenced on May 2 to 42 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
Carbondale Police officers responded to the 1100 block of East College Street on January 4, 2023. The victim was identified as 26-year-old Gloria Hopkins of Carbondale.
Investigators say she was the victim of a domestic violence incident with her husband, Gregory Hopkins.
The investigators collaborated with the Jackson County State’s Attorney Office and obtained an arrest warrant for Hopkins on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated domestic battery.
Cervantez says Hopkins left Carbondale and traveled to the Los Angeles, California area.
Los Angelas Police Department officers found Hopkins. He was brought back to Jackson County to await trial.
On September 27, 2023, just four days before trial, Hopkins pleaded guilty to first degree murder.
On May 2, 2024, after a contested sentencing hearing, Hopkins was sentenced to 42 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
Cervantez says he will serve 100% of his sentence.
State’s Attorney Joseph A. Cervantez led the prosecution.
The Carbondale Police Department led the investigation with assistance from the Illinois State Police and the Los Angeles Police Department.
