Cape Girardeau police investigating homicide as ‘very fragile situation’

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – Cape Girardeau police responded to a deadly shooting on Bellevue and Fountain street Saturday evening.

The victim, 22-year-old Nathan Hinojosa of Cape Girardeau, was found lying in the road with gunshot wounds.

Cape Girardeau police are not commenting on specifics on the homicide case.

“An investigation like a homicide, that’s a very, very, difficult, and very fragile situation, even the smallest detail can really hang a case one way or the other,” said Corporal Ryan Droege with the Cape Girardeau Police Department. “And so that’s why it’s very vital for that information to get filtered to the Major Case Squad before we can release anything.”

Once the major case squad is activated, Cpl. Droege says a press release is issued stating the time and location of the homicide as well as the custody status of any suspects. This is public safety information.

The location of Saturday’s shooting was close to the busy downtown Cape Girardeau area where businesses, visitors and restaurants are located.

“It is quite alarming that we’re having that, that close to downtown, where so many people frequent our businesses and the campus also,” said Pichy Carrasquillo, owner of Omakase restaurant.

The suspect in the murder investigation, Izaiah James turner, 18, of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, made an appearance in court Monday.

He was formally charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with the deadly shooting on October 15.
