CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — The Cape Girardeau Public Library will host a Backyard BBQ Kickoff event May 30 to celebrate the start of summer reading programs, American history and the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary.
The free community event is scheduled from noon to 3 p.m. on the library’s back lawn at 711 N. Clark St. Organizers said the afternoon will feature games, food, entertainment and activities for all ages.
Planned entertainment includes performances by a multi-hula hooper, a stilt walker and the Big Muddy Brass Quintet. Attendees will also have the opportunity to help paint a community mural panel with artists Barb Bailey and Aaron Horrell.
The event will also include an interactive presentation focused on the Declaration of Independence, along with games and contests held throughout the afternoon for both children and adults. Winners will receive prizes.
Free hot dogs, hamburgers, chips and water will be available while supplies last.
Library officials said the event is funded through a gift from the Carnegie Corporation of New York as part of Carnegie Libraries 250, an initiative recognizing the upcoming 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and celebrating Carnegie libraries across the United States.
Children attending the event must be accompanied by an adult. Organizers also noted that food may contain allergens and encouraged anyone needing accommodations to contact the library in advance.
