Carbondale announces month-long freedom celebration honoring Juneteenth, Fourth of July
CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — The City of Carbondale has announced the Freedom-to-Freedom Celebration, a month-long series of free events honoring Juneteenth and the Fourth of July.
The celebration, which runs from June 7 to July 4, includes educational and family-friendly events throughout the Carbondale area.
The African American Museum of Southern Illinois and nearly 30 local organizations have partnered to host the events, which include the annual Ms. Juneteenth Pageant and a Fourth of July fireworks display on the Southern Illinois University campus.
Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.
Mayor Carolin Harvey says the celebration invites the community to learn, reflect and celebrate the values of freedom.
