Carbondale issues notice after drinking water reporting violation, says water remains safe

CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — The City of Carbondale has issued a public notice after a recent violation of a drinking water standard during monitoring in early December 2025.

City officials said the issue involved a reported disinfectant level that did not meet required standards for contact time with chlorine in the treatment process. However, officials emphasized the situation was not an emergency and the water remained safe for use.

Residents do not need to boil water or take any additional precautions. Testing conducted during the same time period did not detect any bacteria or disease-causing organisms in the water supply.

Officials said the violation was the result of an incorrectly reported chlorine value that did not accurately reflect actual disinfection levels. The city said the true chlorine levels were within compliance, but the reported data did not meet regulatory requirements.

The city continues to monitor water quality and said current disinfectant levels meet all required standards.

Officials noted that while inadequately treated water can pose health risks, no contamination was detected during the affected period.

Residents with questions can contact the Carbondale Water Treatment Plant.
