Carbondale man arrested on federal warrant, faces new gun charges

CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) – On September 20, 2025, at approximately 11:47 p.m., Carbondale Police officers encountered Hakeem I. Smith, 36, in the 700 block of East Grand Avenue. Officers recognized Smith as wanted on a federal probation violation warrant.

When officers attempted to arrest him, Smith resisted, resulting in a minor injury to an officer. He was found in possession of a loaded firearm at the time of the arrest.

Smith was taken into custody and transported to the Jackson County Jail, pending a detention hearing. In addition to the federal warrant, he faces multiple charges:

  • Aggravated Unlawful Possession of a Firearm
  • Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a Felon
  • Felony Resisting a Peace Officer

The investigation is active and ongoing.
