Carbondale man found guilty of felon in possession of a firearm

MURPHYSBORO, Ill. (KBSI) – A Carbondale man was found guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Robert R. Martin, 21, was found guilty of two counts of felon in possession of a firearm.

In a three-day jury trial, the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office presented evidence that on Friday, January 14, 2022, the Carbondale Police Department received an anonymous Crime Stoppers Tip that two people suspected in an aggravated discharge investigation were at the former Denny’s in Carbondale, according to Jackson County State’s Attorney Joseph A. Cervantez.

Officers recovered a loaded AK-47 rifle and a loaded Glock 17 handgun with an extended magazine at the scene.

Officers detained two people. One of those was Martin. He was previously convicted of a felony, for possessing those firearms.

The investigation was led by the Carbondale Police Department. The prosecution team was led by Assistant State’s Attorney Sophia M. Allen.
