Carbondale police arrest man on federal warrant, additional firearm charges

CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) – A Carbondale man was arrested Saturday night after police discovered he was wanted on a federal probation violation warrant and found him in possession of a loaded firearm.

At approximately 11:47 p.m. on Sept. 20, Carbondale Police officers observed Hakeem I. Smith, 36, in the 700 block of East Grand Avenue. Officers recognized Smith as having an active federal warrant. When they attempted to arrest him, police said he resisted and caused a minor injury to one of the officers.

During the arrest, officers found Smith in possession of a loaded firearm. In addition to the outstanding warrant, Smith was charged with aggravated unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, and felony resisting a peace officer.

Smith was transported to the Jackson County Jail, where he awaits a detention hearing. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
