Carbondale police launch online crime mapping tool Citizen Connect

CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — The Carbondale Police Department has launched Citizen Connect, an online public crime-mapping tool designed to provide residents with accessible crime information.

Citizen Connect compiles data from the department’s Tyler Technologies reporting software and maps police-generated incident reports from across the city.

The department emphasized that the platform does not display exact addresses. Instead, incidents are shown in close proximity to where calls originated to protect the privacy and rights of victims and others involved. Names and identifying information are not made public. Some reports may not appear immediately as data is reviewed, verified and audited before being published.

Police Chief Anthony Copeland said the new tool reflects the department’s commitment to transparency and community engagement.

“By providing residents with easy access to crime information, we hope to create a shared understanding of what’s happening in our neighborhoods,” Copeland said. “We encourage the community to use this tool, stay informed and partner with the Carbondale Police Department as we work toward solutions and continue building a safer, stronger Carbondale for everyone.”

Copeland said he hopes the tool encourages dialogue within neighborhoods and between residents and officers.

“We can’t have an intelligent conversation on how we move forward or address problems in an area without both parties being involved and advised,” Copeland said. “The information has to be available to both sides.”

Citizen Connect can be accessed through the Carbondale Police Department webpage or by visiting Services | Carbondale, IL.
