FRANKFORT, Ky. (KBSI) — Construction on the Brent Spence Bridge Corridor project is expected to begin this spring, marking a major milestone for the long-planned effort to improve transportation between Kentucky and Ohio, Gov. Andy Beshear announced Monday.

The project will start with construction of a new companion bridge and improvements to about one mile of highway approaches in both states. Officials said shifting Interstate 71 and Interstate 75 traffic onto the new bridge is expected to provide quicker safety improvements and reduce congestion.

“This project will deliver safer travel, create good-paying construction jobs and support commerce across our region,” Beshear said.

The initial phase of the project is estimated to cost $4.05 billion, with Kentucky responsible for $1.7 billion. Funding is expected to come from state revenues and financing, along with shared costs for the companion bridge. Officials said the project will move forward without tolls.

The new bridge is expected to open in 2031, with approach work substantially complete by 2033.

The project is also expected to generate significant employment, with more than 700 skilled workers anticipated and up to 1,000 workers at peak construction. Wages are expected to start at about $30 per hour.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Secretary Jim Gray called the project a long-awaited improvement for commuters and businesses, while Ohio Department of Transportation Director Pamela Boratyn said the effort reflects years of planning and collaboration between the two states.

Construction will bring traffic changes in both Covington, Kentucky, and Cincinnati, Ohio. In Kentucky, ramp access will be limited as crews begin work on bridge approaches, along with utility upgrades and trail closures. In Ohio, several ramps and connections along Interstate 71, Interstate 75 and U.S. 50 will be temporarily closed or rerouted during construction.

Officials said updates on traffic impacts and construction progress will be shared through the project website and social media channels.

The Brent Spence Bridge Corridor project has been discussed for decades and is considered a key infrastructure investment for regional and national transportation.
