Deputy killed in early-morning shooting in Martin

MARTIN, Tenn., (KBSI) — A Weakley County sheriff’s deputy was killed early Friday after being shot while responding to a disturbance call in Martin, authorities said.

Officers with the Martin Police Department responded at about 2:51 a.m. Jan. 30 to a report of a disturbance and possible shots fired at the Days Inn, located at 800 University St. Deputies with the Weakley County Sheriff’s Office responded to assist.

As deputies were arriving in the area around 3:09 a.m., officials said they observed an occupied vehicle leaving a nearby gas station at 821 University St. Authorities said the driver fired shots from the vehicle, striking a Weakley County sheriff’s deputy.

Martin police officers responded to the shooting scene on University Street, where the suspect was taken into custody.

The injured deputy was transported to Volunteer Community Hospital, where the deputy was later pronounced dead.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has been requested to investigate the incident. Authorities said there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Additional information is expected to be released by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
