CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — Old Town Cape Inc. is preparing for the holiday season with several events planned in downtown Cape Girardeau, including a Christmas tree lighting, Small Business Saturday and the 34th annual Parade of Lights.

The holiday festivities will begin Friday, Nov. 27, with the downtown Christmas tree lighting from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Small Business Saturday will follow Nov. 28, encouraging residents to shop at locally owned businesses throughout downtown Cape Girardeau.

The 34th annual Parade of Lights will take place Sunday, Nov. 29, beginning at 5 p.m.

This year’s parade theme is “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” selected by parade chairs Kent and Vicki Zickfield, owners of Zickfield’s Jewelry & Gifts in downtown Cape Girardeau.

The parade will feature holiday-themed floats from businesses and organizations across the region. Santa and Mrs. Claus are also expected to make an appearance near the end of the parade.

Participants are encouraged to decorate their entries with lights and play holiday music.

Judges will recognize entries in several categories, including best theme, best business or organization appearance, best nonprofit appearance, best music, best lighting, best marching band and the chairman’s award.

The parade will begin at the intersection of Broadway and West End Boulevard, travel east along Broadway, turn right onto Main Street and end at the parking lot across from Hutson’s Big Sandy Furniture.

Additional holiday events include the Downtown Holiday Open House on Friday, Dec. 4, from 4 to 9 p.m.

Twinkle & Twirl on Fountain will take place Dec. 16-19. Advance registration is required for that event.

The holiday celebrations are supported by several community sponsors, including Drury Southwest, Rhodes, Saint Francis Healthcare System and The Rhodes Group.
