Firefighters prepare ahead of winter weather

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – When severe weather strikes first responders still must respond to emergencies and with winter weather on the way firefighters say that response times can slow as roads become slick and visibility drops, they say that they are preparing now.

According to Cape Fire Chief Randy Morris snow and ice can significantly affect response times from frozen equipment to frozen water and hoses, and winter storms in general can also lead to an increase in emergency response calls.

“We make sure that all of our stuff is ready, that we’re able to get around. We have on spot chains for our, fire trucks that’s a chain that revolves underneath the tire, so it gives us traction says Morris.

Chief Morris is reminding citizen’s the best way to help them is to stay off the roads, them having a clear road with less traffic during severe winter weather makes it safer to do their job.

“Stay home, please, please stay home. Please stay off the roads. Give our public works department, a chance to get the roadways cleared as best as possible” says Morris.
