Flags set up to honor fallen veterans at Cape County Park North
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – Many locals used the July 4 holiday to remember fallen veterans.
One thousand American flags were set up across Cape County Park North for the 4th of July.
The flags are there to honor fallen Cape Girardeau residents for their service to this country.
The residents may have passed away during or after their service.
The flags serve as a great reminder to honor our veterans for their sacrifice.
“It’s awesome, it absolutely is, obviously a lot of work and a lot of money obviously had to be put into that in order to do that we had never seen anything like that until 2021 with the display of so many American flags and so even in 2021 it was absolutely awesome it was just awesome to see,” said Melissa Day who came to the park on July 4.
The path is called the Avenue of Flags. It is installed by members of the Cape Girardeau community.
This year, members of Southeast Missouri State University athletics helped in setting up the flags.
The Avenue of Flags began on Memorial Day in 1987 when the VFW Post 3838 was given 80 flags from families in remembrance of their fallen soldiers.
